Mandy Carter is a southern Black lesbian activist with a 50-year movement history of social, racial, and LGBTQ justice organizing since 1967. Ms. Carter lives in Durham, North Carolina. She is a co-founder of Southerners On New Ground. And, she is a co-founder of the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC). A national civil rights organization dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and same-gender loving people. NBJC’s mission is to end racism and homophobia. Since 2003, NBJC has provided leadership at the intersection of national civil rights groups and LGBTQ/SGL organizations, advocating for the unique challenges and needs of the African American LGBTQ/SGL community that are often relegated to the sidelines. The Mandy Carter Papers Collection was acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women’s History and Culture. Repository of the David M.
