Since the age of three, Sarah has had a stutter, which made her a target of bullying at school. Nevertheless, in the 10th grade, Sarah was one of the first students from her middle school to gain acceptance to a highly selective high school.
She did not know anyone there when she arrived and had to travel upwards of three hours every day to get to and from school, but Sarah was determined to excel. In recognition for her outstanding accomplishments, Sarah received a Beat the Odds® scholarship award—funded by generous Children’s Defense Fund supporters like you.
“Whatever she does, she applies herself to. She puts her whole heart into it,” says her high school social worker Danielle Armstrong. “And I love that about Sarah.”
